Alabama State Requirements

Continuing Education Hours

  • 24 Hours Biennially including 3 Hours of Ethics.

License Renewal

  • License renewal date is the last day of the agent’s birth month every two years. Producers born in odd numbered years renew in odd numbered years. Producers born in even numbered years renew in even number years
  • Proof of Citizenship required

Courses accepted for CE Credit

  • Classroom/Seminar Courses
  • Self-Study Courses
  • Online Courses
  • Instructors will receive the same number of credits as the attendees

Course Subject Requirements

  • Three (3) hours of ethics each compliance period.
  • Any approved course, without regard to the type of license held, may be taken for CE credit.

Annuity Requirement

  • Effective January 1, 2017: An insurance producer who engages in the sale of annuity products shall complete a one-time annuity training course approved for four (4) credit hours.
  • Insurance producers who hold a life insurance line of authority on Effective Date: January 1st, 2017 who desire to sell annuities must complete the annuity training course requirement for four (4) on or before July1st, 2017.
  • Individuals who obtain a life insurance line of authority on or after January 1st, 2017 may not engage in the sale of annuities until the required annuity training course has been completed.

Long Term Care Requirement

  • Eight (8) hours initial, one-time LTC course and a four (4) hour ongoing LTC course every compliance period following
  • Newly licensed resident producers will have to satisfy the LTC one-time 8-hour training requirement before selling LTC insurance

Carryover Requirements

No CE carryover hours allowed.

Course Repetition

Credit will not be given for a course that is repeated within a compliance period.

Final Exam

  • The examination must be administered by an impartial third-party proctor, who must sign an affidavit attesting to the fact that the student received no outside assistance in the completion of the final examination.
  • General Monitor Affidavit required.


  • Newly Licensed less than 12 months and those holding Limited Line Licenses.
  • Non-residents who have satisfied any CE requirements in their resident state.
